Why was my new account blocked?

Updated · 2 min read

A new account can be stopped if it's linked to another account that's banned, or if it's made on the same device as an account that has reached its plan's storage limit. These checks stop people from getting around bans and plan limits with extra accounts. If you think we got it wrong, contact us.

"This account is banned because it's linked to another account that's banned"

We found a link between your new account and an account that's banned or suspended, so your new account was banned too.

  • This ban follows the other account's. If that account's ban or suspension is lifted, yours is lifted as well, at the latest the next time you sign in.
  • It can also happen later: an account made after that ban can be banned the next time it signs in from a linked device.

"You already have an account on this device that has reached its plan's storage limit"

This one doesn't ban anything. It just stops a new account from being created, because a new account can't be used to get extra storage.

  • Sign in to your existing account and upgrade its plan, or free up space by deleting uploads you don't need. See Upload limits and storage.
  • Once that account is no longer at its limit, you can try again.

What to do if it's a mistake

Links can occasionally catch people who share a device or connection, like family members, roommates or people using the same studio computer.

  1. Open the Contact page and choose Account & sign-in.
  2. Tell us the username of your new account (or the email you tried to sign up with) and the exact message you saw.
  3. If you know whose account yours might be linked to, say so and explain how you're connected, for example "my brother uses the same laptop."

A member of staff can review it and release your account if it isn't ban or limit evasion. Once released, it isn't blocked this way again.

We don't share how accounts are linked. That keeps the check working for everyone.
