How do I block or mute someone?

Updated · 2 min read

Open the ⋯ menu on the person's profile, post or comment and choose Mute or Block. Muting quietly hides them from you. Blocking cuts off contact both ways. You can undo either in Settings → Privacy.

Mute or block?

Mute

  • Their posts and activity stay out of your feeds.
  • Their comments and their notifications are hidden from you.
  • They aren't told. They can still see your posts, and you can still visit their profile.
  • Muting doesn't affect messages. They can still message you.

Block

  • You can't see each other's profiles or posts, and their comments are hidden from you (and yours from them).
  • They can't message you. Your conversation with them shows as Unavailable.
  • You stop following each other. Unblocking doesn't restore the follow.
  • They don't get a notification that you blocked them.

Mute when someone is simply too much for your feed. Block when you don't want them to see or reach you.

Step by step

  • From their profile: select More (⋯) next to Follow, then Mute or Block, and confirm.
  • From a post: open the post's ⋯ menu and choose Mute [name] or Block [name].
  • From a comment: open the comment's ⋯ menu and choose Mute [name] or Block [name].
  • From Messages: open the conversation's menu and choose Block. For a message request from someone you don't know, you can also select Block on the request banner.

Undo a block or mute

  1. Go to Settings → Privacy.
  2. Find the person under Blocked or Muted.
  3. Select Unblock or Unmute and confirm.

You can also unmute from their profile's More menu, unblock from their profile page, or select Unblock in your conversation with them.

Good to know

  • If someone is harassing, threatening or impersonating you, report them as well. Blocking protects you; reporting lets moderators act. See How do I report something?.
  • Blocking and muting are per person. To stop messages from people you don't know, see Message requests.
  • You can't block or mute yourself.
