How do I create a community?
Go to Start a community (the New community or Create a community button on the Community page), fill in the basics, pick public or private, add optional rules and tags, and tap Create community. You become its owner.
How many you can create
The number of communities you can start depends on your plan. If you've reached it, the page says so, shows how many you've started, and names the plan that allows more. Communities you've deleted don't count.
Step by step
- Name: the display name people see, at least 3 characters.
- Web address: your
c/name. Use 3 to 30 lowercase letters, numbers and single hyphens. It's checked as you type, and it can't be changed later. - What's it about?: up to 1,000 characters on who it's for and what to post. You can add a spoken welcome with Record a welcome.
- Look: add an Icon (square, 256px or larger) and a Banner (wide, 1500×500). JPG, PNG, GIF or WebP, up to 8 MB each.
- Who can join: Public (anyone can see posts and join) or Private (only members see posts; people ask to join and a moderator approves them).
- Rules (optional): tap a suggested rule or write your own. Each rule has a title and optional details. Reorder them with the arrows, and add a voice note with Record the rules.
- Tags (optional): labels people add to posts, like Discussion or New Music. Pick a color, and turn on Mods only for tags only moderators can use, like Announcement.
- Check the live preview, then tap Create community.
Limits
- Up to 15 rules (titles up to 120 characters, details up to 2,000).
- Up to 20 tags (names up to 40 characters, eight colors).
- Some names are reserved (like create, admin or help), and names that differ only by a hyphen or underscore count as taken.
After you create it
- You can change everything except the web address later in Mod tools on the community page. Only the owner can change the name, images and privacy, or delete the community.
- Add moderators any time in Mod tools → Moderators.
- Public communities you create show up in your activity.
Delete this community (in Mod tools → Settings) deletes all of its posts and comments for good. It can't be undone.
Troubleshooting
- That name is taken or That name is reserved: try a different web address.
- Images must be JPG, PNG, GIF or WebP or Images can be up to 8 MB: resize or convert the image.
- You've reached your plan's limit: delete a community you no longer run, or see Which plan is right for me?.
