How does Continue watching work?
On this page
When you stop a video partway through, offtheave remembers where you left off. The next time you open it, it picks up from that spot, and it shows in the Continue watching row on Videos. When you’re signed in, your place follows you to your other devices.
How it works
- Signed in: your position is saved to your account while you watch and again when you leave the page, so you can stop on your phone and resume on your computer.
- Signed out: your position is saved in this browser only. The next time you sign in on that browser, those videos move to your account.
- Resuming: open the video (from Continue watching, your history or anywhere else) and it starts where you stopped. This works for uploaded videos and YouTube videos.
- Each card in Continue watching shows a progress bar and how much time is left.
What gets remembered
- Only videos. Shorts aren’t tracked.
- A video is only saved once you’ve watched more than the first 10 seconds.
- A video counts as finished in its last 5% or when less than 20 seconds are left. Finished videos drop off the row.
- Positions older than 60 days are forgotten.
- If a video becomes private or you lose access to it, it no longer shows in your row.
A link that includes a time (for example a “Play from 1:15” link on a comment) always starts at that time instead of where you left off.
Removing a video from Continue watching
There’s no remove button yet. Watch the video to the end (or skip to the last few seconds) and it leaves the row, or it drops off by itself after 60 days.
Troubleshooting
- My other device doesn’t resume. Make sure you’re signed in to the same account on both. Signed-out viewing stays in the browser you used.
- A video I barely started isn’t there. The first 10 seconds aren’t saved.
- The row is missing. It only appears when you have at least one unfinished video.
