How do I send a quick message?

Updated · 1 min read

A quick message lets you send someone a short direct message without leaving the page you're on. It goes into your normal conversation with them in Messages.

Where to find it

  • The Message button (speech bubble) on a member's profile and on author cards.
  • Message in the ⋯ menu on feed posts, comments, community posts, photo albums, shorts, and song, mixtape, playlist and video pages.

You won't see the option on your own content. If you're signed out, you'll be taken to sign in first.

Step by step

  1. Tap Message. A New message sheet opens with the person's name at the top.
  2. Write your message (up to 2,000 characters here). A counter appears as you get close to the limit.
  3. Optionally add one extra: Add a GIF, Add emoji, or Add a voice message.
  4. Tap Send, or press Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on a Mac).

You'll see "Message sent to" and the person's name. To keep talking, tap Open conversation.

Good to know

  • One attachment per message: a GIF or a voice note. Picking one replaces the other. Your text is sent along with it.
  • GIFs come from the built-in GIF search.
  • Voice note length depends on your plan. See Voice notes.
  • The usual message rules apply. If they don't follow you, it may land in their message requests.

Troubleshooting

  • You can't send messages to this user: one of you has blocked the other.
  • That account doesn't exist: the account was removed or renamed.
  • Voice notes aren't part of your plan: your plan doesn't include voice notes. Send text or a GIF instead.
  • Could not send the message: check your connection and try again. Your text stays in the box.
