How do voice notes work?

Updated · 2 min read

You can record a short voice note and add it to posts, comments and replies, community posts, a community's welcome and rules, direct messages, and your profile's voice intro. How long a voice note can be depends on your plan.

Your plan's limit

The Voice notes row shows your plan's longest recording. The recorder also shows your limit before you start.

Record a voice note

  1. Tap the microphone. Depending on where you are, it's called Add a voice note, Record a voice note, Record a welcome, Record the rules or, in Messages, Record a voice message (shown when the message box is empty).
  2. Allow microphone access if your browser asks.
  3. Talk. A timer and level bars show it's working. Recording stops on its own when you reach your plan's limit.
  4. Stop, then listen back.
  5. Tap the check (Use this voice note) to attach it, or send it straight away in Messages.

An attached note shows as a small player in the box. Tap its X to remove it and record another. Each post, comment or field holds one voice note.

Listening

  • Tap play. Tap anywhere on the waveform to jump to that point.
  • Change the speed between 1x, 1.5x and 2x.
  • Only one voice note plays at a time, and music playing on the site pauses.

Your profile voice intro

A voice intro is a short greeting that plays from your profile. Add or change it from your profile or in Edit profile. Its menu has Record a new intro and Remove from profile. See Anthem and voice intro.

Good to know

  • Recordings are converted to a standard audio format that plays on every device. Anything past your plan's limit is cut off.
  • Very short recordings (under about half a second) aren't saved.
  • If you record a lot in one hour, you'll be asked to wait a bit before recording more.
  • Voice notes show wherever the post, comment or message is shown. Treat them like anything else you post in public.

Troubleshooting

  • Voice notes aren't part of your plan: your current plan doesn't include them. The recorder links to the plan that does.
  • Allow microphone access: your browser blocked the mic. Allow it for offtheave in your browser's site settings and try again.
  • Voice messages aren't supported in this browser: update your browser or try another one.
  • That recording couldn't be processed or an upload error: try again. In Messages, the recording stays on screen so you can resend it.
