How do I make a song in the Booth?
On this page
The Booth is a recording studio in your browser. Bring in a beat or instrumental (or make one), record your vocals over it, mix each part, and render a finished track to your Vault, ready to release. There’s nothing to download or install. Open it from the menu under Creator Studio → Create Track, or go to /creator/booth.
Want a hands-on walkthrough? In any session, open the ⋯ menu and choose Take the tour. It shows you each part of the Booth in about 2 minutes. The first time you open a session, you’re offered the tour with Show me around.
1. Start a session
- On Booth, press New session.
- Give it a name (and a cover and notes if you like), then press Create and open.
Depending on your plan, sessions are saved to your account (they open on any device) or in the browser you made them in (see What your plan includes below). If your plan saves to your account and you have sessions that are only in this browser, choose Save to cloud from a session’s menu, or select several and press Save to cloud.
2. Bring in your audio
Press Import (or Import a beat in an empty session) and pick an audio file: MP3, WAV and more, up to 80 MB. It lands on the timeline as a new track. No beat yet? Make one with the Beat maker; see How do I use the Beat Maker in the Booth?
3. Find your way around
- The timeline: each row is a track, and time runs left to right. The numbers along the top are bars. Tap the ruler to move the playhead.
- Select a track by tapping its row on the left. The speaker icon mutes it; on a computer, the headphones icon plays it alone (solo).
- Move a clip by dragging it. Trim it by dragging the edges of a selected clip. Switch to Split and tap a clip to cut it in two.
- The magnet snaps clips to the beat. − and + zoom. The arrows undo and redo.
- Set the tempo in BPM at the bottom (60 to 200).
- The track counter (for example 2/4 tracks) shows how many tracks you’ve used out of what your plan allows. Every import, recording, beat and copy uses one. Tap it for details.
On a computer: Space plays and pauses, S switches to Split, V switches back to Move, Ctrl+Z undoes, Ctrl+D copies the selected track and Ctrl+S saves (⌘ on a Mac).
4. Record your vocals
- Put on headphones. Without them, the beat plays out of your speakers and gets recorded by your mic.
- Move the playhead to where you want to start, then press Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
- The session plays from the playhead while your mic records. Press the button again to stop.
Every take becomes its own track (Vocal take 1, 2…), lined up with the music. Keep the best one and mute or delete the rest. Turn on the metronome (the timer icon next to BPM) if you want a click to keep time.
5. Mix each track
Select a track to open its settings: in the panel on the right on a computer, or by pressing Track at the top on a phone.
- Rename it and set its type (Beat, Vocal, Instrument or Audio).
- Mute, Solo, Copy or delete it.
- Mix: Volume, Pan (left and right) and Reverse.
- Pitch: up or down 12 semitones.
- EQ: Low, Mid and High.
- Space: Reverb and Echo.
Double-click a slider to reset it. Sections with a lock show which plan unlocks them.
6. Save
Press Save (or Ctrl+S / ⌘S). The top bar shows whether you have unsaved changes, and the Booth warns you if you try to leave before saving.
7. Render and release
- Press Render. The Booth mixes every track into one file so you can listen to it.
- Check the Title and choose Beat (no vocals) or Song.
- Press Save to Vault to keep it private in your Vault, or Download WAV for a copy.
- After saving, press Release it to open the upload form with your render attached, Design a cover in Canvas, or Open the Vault.
See What is the Vault? to release several renders together as a mixtape.
What your plan includes
Tracks per session, saving sessions to your account, effects (EQ, reverb, echo) and pitch depend on your plan. Volume, pan, mute, solo and reverse work on every plan.
Compare plans and upgrade at Subscribe. Drum kits and sounds in the Beat maker can also be tied to a plan; locked ones show which plan unlocks them.
Troubleshooting
- “Allow microphone access to record.” Allow the microphone for offtheave in your browser’s site settings, then press Record again.
- “Your plan allows … tracks per session.” Delete a track you don’t need, or upgrade.
- “Couldn’t render the mix.” Make sure at least one track isn’t muted, then try again.
- “Session not found.” Sessions saved in a browser only open in that browser.
- “This browser is out of space for sessions.” Delete old browser sessions, or use a plan that saves sessions to your account.
Tips
- Record in a quiet room, about a hand’s width from the mic.
- Record your hook once, then copy the track to use it again.
- If a vocal sounds early or late, turn off snap and drag the take left or right.
